How Do You Get Popular on Facebook? I mean, which kinds of posts get the most attention?

Attracting attention on Facebook is a mixed bag. It’s less about the quantity and more about the quality of the attention you’re receiving (or—by translation--the number of friends you have).

Having 1,000 friends isn’t as important as having—say—600 friends who are interested in you and what you have to share/say/sell/promote. The best way I’ve found to gain and maintain friends is to post status updates that either:

a) Ask an important/interesting question

b) Offer interesting/unique information by way of a link to an article/TV clip

c) Offer a glimpse into who you are as a person.

When you ask a question, you’re encouraging people to offer their opinion, which most people like to do! When you share, for example, a news story about something relevent, you’re helping people educate themselves. And when you share an anecdote about your life, people often feel they can relate to you, which makes them want to read your regular posts.

One thing to note is that, while the content of Facebook posts is important, the frequency of said posts is equally important. If you speak up every single time you do something, your posts become “noise.”

Facebook Ads Targeting Options

Targeting in the Interests section is a database of available targets that Facebook has loaded in and chosen. If you aren't seeing a specific Page's title, it simply might have not made the cut. I have had the same problem and noticed that some Pages can be targeted, and some huge Pages aren't on the list.

The best way around it is two things. One, think of related actions or Pages to that specific Page. Is it a company that makes a certain product? What about competitors or just that product and related products?

The other piece of advice is to look at the members of that Page, are they all from a similar area? Of similar age? Same gender? You can target on those options on that. If you call out that Page's name in the ad, especially in the title, other people most likely wont click on that ad. And if they do they could be potential members for that other Page that you were trying to target in the first place.

New Facebook 2011 Edit Options

The "New Facebook" has a newsfeed setting that by default is automatically set to show ONLY posts from people who you've recently interacted with or interacted the most with (which would be limited to the couple of weeks just before people started switching to the new profile). So in other words, unless your friends commented on one of your posts within those few weeks or vice versa - you are now invisible to them and they are invisible to you!!

HERE'S THE FIX: On the homepage click the "Most Recent" title on the right of the Newsfeed, then click on the drop down arrow beside it and select "Edit Options", click on "Show Posts From" and change the setting to "All Of Your Friends and Pages" (you can also access the "Edit Options" link at the very bottom of the facebook homepage on the right)

The good news is: now you can now view all of your friends and fans again. The bad news is: YOU ARE STILL INVISIBLE to a large portion of your list. You must get the word out to ALL of your friends and fans by inviting them to this fan page or post one of your note / wall so they can read the post and adjust their settings.
